Spray Paint Wood Patio Furniture

Wood patio furniture can be expensive and may not always be available in the style or finish you desire. With a little sanding and primer, you can easily transform old or outdated patio furniture into something new and stylish.

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

You will need the following materials:

  • Wood patio furniture
  • Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
  • Tack cloth
  • Primer for wood
  • Spray paint in the desired color
  • Clear spray sealer
  • Drop cloths or plastic sheeting

Step 2: Clean the Furniture

Use a damp cloth to wipe down the furniture and remove any dirt or debris.

Step 3: Sand the Furniture

Use 120-grit sandpaper to sand the furniture in the direction of the wood grain. This will remove any existing finish and smooth the surface.

Once you have sanded the furniture with 120-grit sandpaper, switch to 220-grit sandpaper and sand the furniture again. This will further smooth the surface and prepare it for primer.

Step 4: Apply Primer

Shake the can of primer and hold it 6-8 inches away from the furniture. Apply a thin, even coat of primer to the furniture, moving in the direction of the wood grain.

Allow the primer to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

Step 5: Spray Paint the Furniture

Shake the can of spray paint and hold it 6-8 inches away from the furniture. Apply a thin, even coat of spray paint to the furniture, moving in the direction of the wood grain.

Allow each coat of spray paint to dry completely before applying the next coat.

Step 6: Seal the Furniture

Once you have applied the desired number of coats of spray paint, allow the final coat to dry completely.

Shake the can of clear spray sealer and hold it 6-8 inches away from the furniture. Apply a thin, even coat of clear spray sealer to the furniture, moving in the direction of the wood grain.

Allow the clear spray sealer to dry completely before using the furniture.

Tips

  • If you are painting furniture that has been previously painted, you may need to use a stripper to remove the old paint before sanding.
  • If you are painting furniture that is in poor condition, you may need to repair any cracks or holes before sanding.
  • To protect your work surface, cover it with drop cloths or plastic sheeting.
  • When spraying paint or clear sealer, wear a mask to avoid inhaling the fumes.
