Repainting Cast Aluminum Patio Furniture

Cast aluminum patio furniture is visually appealing and easy to maintain. To retain its aesthetic appeal, you may occasionally need to repaint it. The process is relatively straightforward and can be completed in a few hours.

Materials Needed:

* Cleaner and degreaser * Stiff brush or cleaning pad * Sandpaper (120- and 220-grit) * Primer for aluminum * Spray paint designed for outdoor use * Painter's tape (optional) * Drop cloths or plastic sheeting

Preparation:

Begin by thoroughly cleaning the furniture with a cleaner and degreaser. Use a stiff brush or cleaning pad to scrub away dirt and grime. Rinse the furniture thoroughly with clean water and allow it to dry completely.

Lightly sand the furniture with 120-grit sandpaper to remove any loose paint or imperfections. Follow up by sanding with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth the surface further. Wipe away any sanding dust with a clean cloth.

Priming:

Apply a thin coat of primer specifically designed for aluminum. Use smooth, even strokes and allow the primer to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Painting:

Choose a spray paint designed for outdoor use and in your preferred color. Shake the can thoroughly for several minutes before using it. If desired, use painter's tape to protect any areas you do not want to paint, such as cushions or hardware.

Hold the spray can 6-8 inches from the furniture and spray in thin, even coats. Allow each coat to dry completely before applying the next. Repeat the process until the desired coverage and color are achieved.

Finishing:

Once the final coat of paint is completely dry, carefully remove any painter's tape and clean the furniture with a damp cloth. Allow the furniture to cure for several days before using it to ensure optimal durability.

Tips:

* Avoid painting in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures. * Use light, even strokes when painting to prevent drips or runs. * Allow ample drying time between coats to prevent cracking or peeling. * If you are unsure about any specific aspect of the process, consult a professional painter for guidance.
