How To Level Cement Patio
A uneven cement patio can be a tripping hazard and an eyesore. If your patio is in need of leveling, there are a few different methods you can use to get the job done. The best method for you will depend on the size and condition of your patio.
For small patios, you can simply use a level and a hand tamper to level the surface. Start by sweeping the patio clean of any debris. Then, place the level on the patio and use the hand tamper to tamp down any high spots. Work your way around the patio until the entire surface is level.
For larger patios, you may need to use a concrete grinder to level the surface. A concrete grinder is a power tool that uses a rotating disc to grind down the surface of the concrete. Start by setting the grinder to the desired depth. Then, slowly move the grinder across the surface of the patio, overlapping your passes slightly. Be careful not to grind too deeply, as this can damage the concrete.
Once you have leveled the surface of the patio, you will need to apply a new layer of concrete. For small patios, you can simply use a pre-mixed concrete mix. For larger patios, you will need to mix your own concrete. To mix concrete, you will need to combine one part cement, two parts sand, and three parts gravel. Add water gradually until the concrete is the consistency of thick soup.
Once the concrete is mixed, pour it onto the leveled patio surface. Use a trowel to spread the concrete evenly and to smooth the surface. Allow the concrete to cure for at least 24 hours before walking on it.
Here are some additional tips for leveling a cement patio:
- If the patio is severely uneven, you may need to excavate the soil beneath the patio and replace it with new soil.
- Be sure to wear safety glasses and gloves when working with concrete.
- Allow the concrete to cure completely before walking on it.
- If you are not comfortable leveling a cement patio yourself, you can hire a professional to do the job for you.
