Free Standing Patio Cover Plans

A free standing patio cover is a great way to add shade and protection from the elements to your outdoor living space. It can also increase the value of your home. If you're handy with tools, you can build your own free standing patio cover using these plans.

Materials:

4x4 posts (8)
2x6 joists (12)
2x4 rafters (16)
1x6 sheathing (enough to cover the roof)
Asphalt shingles (enough to cover the roof)
Concrete mix
Nails
Screws
Flashing

Tools:

Saw
Drill
Hammer
Screwdriver
Level
Tape measure
Concrete mixer

Instructions:

Prepare the site.
Clear the area where you want to build the patio cover and level the ground.
Set the posts.
Dig holes for the posts, 2 feet deep and 6 feet apart. Place the posts in the holes and fill them with concrete. Allow the concrete to cure for at least 24 hours.
Attach the joists.
Cut the joists to length and attach them to the posts using nails or screws. Space the joists evenly, about 16 inches apart.
Attach the rafters.
Cut the rafters to length and attach them to the joists using nails or screws. Space the rafters evenly, about 24 inches apart.
Sheathe the roof.
Cover the roof with 1x6 sheathing, nailing it to the rafters.
Install the shingles.
Cover the roof with asphalt shingles, following the manufacturer's instructions.
Install the flashing.
Install flashing around the edges of the roof to prevent water from leaking in.
