How To Recover Patio Cushions

Patio cushions can be a great way to add comfort and style to your outdoor space, but they can also be expensive to replace. If your patio cushions are starting to look faded or worn, you can save money by recovering them yourself. Here are the steps on how to recover patio cushions:

Materials You'll Need:

New fabric
Scissors
Measuring tape
Chalk or fabric marker
Sewing machine
Thread
Zipper (optional)

Step 1: Remove the Old Fabric

Start by removing the old fabric from the cushions. You can do this by carefully cutting the stitches around the edges of the fabric. Once the old fabric is removed, you should have a bare cushion.

Step 2: Measure the Cushion

Use a measuring tape to measure the length, width, and height of the cushion. Add 2 inches to each measurement to allow for seams.

Step 3: Cut the New Fabric

Cut two pieces of fabric according to the measurements you took in step 2. If you are using a patterned fabric, make sure to cut the pieces so that the pattern is centered on the cushion.

Step 4: Sew the Fabric Together

Place the two pieces of fabric right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving a 4-inch opening for turning. Turn the fabric right side out and insert the cushion.

Step 5: Finish the Opening

Hand-stitch the opening closed or insert a zipper to close the cushion cover.

Tips:

Use a heavy-duty fabric for outdoor cushions. Sunbrella is a good choice because it is fade-resistant and water-resistant.
If you are not confident in your sewing skills, you can take the cushions to a seamstress or upholsterer to have them recovered.
To keep your cushions looking their best, store them indoors when not in use.
