How To Make Cushions For Patio Furniture

Patio furniture cushions can be replaced easily and inexpensively. You can make your own cushions for a fraction of the cost of buying new ones. With just a few basic supplies, you can create custom cushions that will add style and comfort to your outdoor space.

Materials:

  1. Foam rubber or batting (for the cushion fill)
  2. Fabric (for the cushion cover)
  3. Scissors
  4. Measuring tape
  5. Needle and thread or a sewing machine
  6. Zipper (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Measure the Cushions: Determine the size and shape of your cushions by measuring the length, width, and height of your patio furniture's seats and backs.
  2. Cut the Foam or Batting: Using your measurements, cut the foam rubber or batting to the size and shape of your cushions. If you are using batting, you may need to layer several pieces to achieve the desired thickness.
  3. Prepare the Fabric: Cut two pieces of fabric to the size and shape of your cushions, adding 1-2 inches to each side for seams. If you are using a zipper, cut a piece of fabric that is 1-2 inches shorter than the length of your cushion. Fold the edges of the fabric under by 1/2 inch and press them with an iron to create a finished edge.
  4. Sew the Cushion Covers: Place the fabric pieces right sides together and sew around the edges, leaving a small opening for turning. Turn the cushion cover right side out and insert the foam or batting. Hand-sew the opening closed.
  5. Add a Zipper (Optional): If you want to be able to remove the cushions' covers for cleaning, you can add a zipper. Sew the zipper to one of the fabric pieces before sewing the cushion cover together. Slip the zipper into the opening in the cushion cover and sew it closed.

Tips:

  • Use a heavy-duty fabric for the cushion covers to withstand outdoor use.
  • Choose foam rubber or batting that is firm enough to provide support but soft enough to be comfortable.
  • If you are using batting, consider using a layer of fabric between the batting and the cushion cover to prevent the batting from shifting.
  • Add piping, cording, or other embellishments to the cushions to give them a professional-looking finish.

Enjoy Your New Cushions:

Your new cushions will add comfort and style to your patio furniture. They are also a great way to update the look of your outdoor space without breaking the bank. So put on your creative hat and get started on making your own cushions today!
