How To Build A Patio Arbor

Step-by-Step Instructions

Prepare the site. Choose a level location for your arbor, and clear away any debris. Dig four holes for the posts, each approximately 2 feet deep and 6 inches wide. Fill the bottom of each hole with 6 inches of gravel, and then set the posts in the holes. Fill the holes with concrete mix, and tamp down firmly to secure the posts.
Attach the beams. Cut two 2x6 beams to the desired length of the arbor. Attach the beams to the posts using 1/2-inch galvanized bolts, washers, and nuts. Make sure the beams are level.
Attach the rafters. Cut four 2x4 rafters to the desired length of the arbor. Attach the rafters to the beams using 1/2-inch galvanized bolts, washers, and nuts. Space the rafters evenly apart.
Attach the cross braces. Cut two 2x4 cross braces to the desired length of the arbor. Attach the cross braces to the rafters using 1/2-inch galvanized bolts, washers, and nuts. The cross braces will help to stabilize the arbor.
Attach the roof. Cut the 1x6 cedar or redwood lumber to the desired width of the roof. Attach the roof boards to the rafters using nails or screws. Overlap the roof boards by about 1 inch.
Apply wood preservative. To protect the arbor from the elements, apply a coat of wood preservative to all of the wood surfaces.

Tips

If you are using a different type of wood for the roof, such as plywood or metal, you will need to use different fasteners to attach it to the rafters.
